On Saturday, March 18, eight students from McDonogh 35 competed in the statewide LSU High School Mathematics Contest in Baton Rouge. The Roneagle team, led by faculty member Menard Baptiste, consisted of Majid Butler, Sandernisha Claiborne, Tomme Denney, DèJaneke Johnson, Terri ‘Ante Robinson, Tianna Robinson, Ryan Samuels and Antoinette Williams.

Although this was the 16th edition of the annual LSU contest, this was the first year that students from McDonogh 35 have participated in the event, which featured the top 200 math students in the state of Louisiana. The Roneagles surprised their more experienced adversaries with a very strong showing in their first year of competition, and the team’s outstanding effort was led by Tomme Denney, who received an award for his top score.

Since seven of the eight team members are eligible to compete again next year—only Antoinette Williams is a member of the Class of 2017—the Roneagles expect to field another strong team for the 2018 competition.
